Start of the project “Narrativization of ethnic identities of adolescents from culturally dominant and minority backgrounds, and the role of the school context” (NidEA)

We proudly announce the start of the project “Narrativization of ethnic identities of adolescents from culturally dominant and minority backgrounds, and the role of the school context” (NidEA), supported by the Science Fund within the program Identities. The project brings together teachers and researchers from the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade, as well as teachers from the State University of Novi Pazar and an external collaborator from the State University of New York. The project leader is Nataša Simić from the Institute of Psychology. Over the two years of the project, a quantitative study will be conducted with more than 3,000 participants (students, parents, and teachers) in at least 16 secondary schools throughout Serbia, as well as a qualitative study with around 300 secondary school students. The goals are: 1. to investigate how adolescents in Serbia construct their ethnic identity, 2. to determine if there are differences in the way students from culturally dominant and minority backgrounds construct their ethnic identities, 3. to explore ways in which schools (and the wider social context) influence the development of ethnic identities and the well-being of adolescents from different backgrounds, genders, and ages. The practical aim is to map examples of good educational practice and define guidelines for different actors in education and policy makers on how to implement and promote culturally relevant education.
